Although gifts are given by the Spirit to lay people for particular tasks or ministry, actions speak louder than words, and all of us are called to live Christianity before we preach it. Only then will it be believed.Billy Graham said that his preaching a crusade would be fruitless if the local Christians were not preaching by lifestyle first. Likewise, eight-hundred years ago St. Francis said simple people convert souls by their lifestyles and their prayers, and they will obtain a heavenly reward for the conversions of souls before preachers do.Preach the Gospel at All Times*How we live either preaches for Christ or against him.

Array-ne Last final swing through some new areas to try and grab a few new species that weren’t gathered on the previous 3 days. First birds of the morning were 5 Western Kingbirds up on the Harmon Road wires. Just after trying for a bad shot of one of the sparrows I edged down Harmon and was met by a Scissor-tail Flycatcher in the company of 2 more Western Kingbirds. Later checking with the Sparrow book showed it to be a 1st Winter White-crowned Sparrow. A Savannah Sparrow lit briefly, crown raised, and then disappeared. Myrtle Warblers tried their best impressions of Sparrows but all I could manage were a few more Savannahs. They were soon joined by some Chipping Sparrows toward the parked dumptrucks. A couple Western Kingbirds hung out on the distant wires past the gate.Counted a few more common species and made one last run at the Kingbird Roost which was now becoming the Robin Roost. I stopped counting at 400 as a lot were dropping into the orange groves but they were joined by more Kingbirds and other birds I could determine without a scope. You can still enter your own bird counts to the GBBC count for a while.

It’s a conversational read and would fall somewhere between scholarly texts and some of the quite startling tabloid style paperbacks one can read on the subject.I guess the key sensation I came away with was a slight sense of being underwhelmed. What did JFK actually achieve? It was dealt with in a non sensationalist style which actually made it all sound rather mechanical, sex scandals really have to written in a slightly naughty style in order to have impact.I did get the sense (one that I’d never really bothered to think about before) that the Kennedys were easily the most ridiculously glamourous family to occupy the White House. I learned almost nothing that I hadn’t picked up from the last 20 years of reading and watching telly.Still, I already have a couple of friends who would like to read this now I’m done and I’ll happily pass it on, not the worst read of the year, certainly if you don’t happen to be a President snob like myself.Labels: books

Further north the road enters the foothills and the curves become a little less gentle and a little more interesting.Appetizing ConcreteI stayed on Granite Road, one I’ve traveled often, all the way to Glenville. After resting my okole there for a few minutes I got back on the Wing for the ride home.At the first fork in the road, I decided to take the road less traveled; This road is quite popular with the rice rocketeers, and sadly claims one each year or so.One of the nice features of my Wingebago is its radio, and I was close enough to Bakersfield to listen to FM music. Green foothills are as rare as rainbows here, and swaying back and forth through the lush green on the curvy road to the sounds of Bradda Iz, thinking warm thoughts of aloha, was magic. Once again I pass the scene where the road ate my Shadow, and I’m reminded to keep a sharp eye out for loose gravel, plentiful on the back road that is my destination. Too easy for the road to eat the bike instead of the other way around.Yesterday the cows by the road barely looked up as I passed by them on my stealthy Wing. I think more of the danger and stop to take a picture of some rocks painted in memory of one of the rice rocketeers who lost his life on this road.MemorialFurther up the road I see a bar that I missed yesterday, perhaps because nobody was there.

From today’s WB42 5:30 Report:First, a a former speach writer for President Bush says the President isn’t connecting with the American People. And he has a warning:If a president continues to do that, he is himself teaching the public and the media to ignore him - especially when the words seem utterly to ignore the past three months of real-world events. You could spend much of the weekend reading all of the material in our second blog. He has some observations on smoking (that’s right, cigarettes), and then makes a suggestion to the President:On another note, I can’t help thinking that right now, we’ve got Iraqis killing Iraqis, Iraqis killing Americans, and Americans killing Iraqis. Just a simple thought for a president who likes to keep things simple. How about another quote from a military official. But not following the President’s talking points (via Sen. Feingold, quoting the millitary official he talked with on a recent visit to Iraq):He said, Nothing would take the wind out of the sails of the insurgents more than having a timeline in place.Hmmm.

Array-ne One swallow does’nt make a summer and one match does’nt quite indicate how the World Cup will eventually span out but here’s my take thus far:I think in some ways this World Cup is going to be like the ‘83 World Cup. Muhammad, who was known to have been in retreat and meditation in a cave outside Mecca [2], had received the first few words of a book that would have a tremendous impact on the world of Arabic literature.[3] Not being known to have composed any piece of poetry and not having any special rhetorical gifts, [4] Muhammed had just received the beginning of a book that would deal with matters of belief, legislation, international law, politics, ritual, spirituality, and economics [5] in an ‘entirely new literary form’.
